Jazz Etude 12

Etude 12Scales Formed From Augmented Triads In Half Steps (Part 2: Melodic explorations of scalar and chordal material)

In this etude I take the ideas from Etude 11 and explore some melodic possibilities with the augmented triad-based scale. There are three (four-bar) phrases from each scale, with each new phrase starting with the ending notes of the previous phrase. My aim here is to give you some technical and aural familiarity with the scalar melodic material that can be formed from the scale. I’ve purposely changed some notes enharmonically (e.g., A# to Bb) within an exercise to make harmonic implications somewhat clearer.
