Jazz Etude 12-Augmented Scales Part 2

Etude 12-Augmented Scales  (Part 2: Melodic explorations of scalar and chordal material)

In this etude I take the ideas from Etude 11 and explore some melodic possibilities with the augmented scale. There are three (four-bar) phrases from each scale, with each new phrase starting with the ending notes of the previous phrase. My aim here is to give you some technical and aural familiarity with the scalar melodic material that can be formed from the scale. I’ve purposely changed some notes enharmonically (e.g., A# to Bb) within an exercise to make harmonic implications somewhat clearer. If you’d like to explore the augmented scale more thoroughly, and learn how it works over dominant 7th chords, consider my book, Augmented Scale Diatonic Triad Pairs.

This scale and its applications are introduced and briefly explored in my book, Melodic Minor Scale Jazz Studies: Tonal Organizations and Applications Over Dominant 7 Chords.
